John Napier invented in 1614 the logarithms. A few years later (circa 1620) William Oughtred discovered the slide-rule. He used two logarithmic rules to multiply, to  divide etc.

Many constructors, engineers, scientists and mathematicians used the slide rule until the pocket calculator made his entrance.
